Grid Stability Becomes Strategic Priority: US & Europe Rush Storage, Flexibility & Digital Control to Manage Renewable Variability

Grid stability took centre stage in Q3 2025. Energy Considered’s tracked Key Opinion Leaders logged 422 mentions this quarter as operators across the US and Europe accelerated investment in grid-scale storage, flexible demand, and digital control to manage renewable variability.

United States: Market access and interconnection –

The US is moving from pilot projects to scaled market rules. FERC Order 841 opened energy, capacity and ancillary markets to storage; Order 2222 lets aggregated DERs (VPPs) compete; and Order 2023 overhauls interconnection so inverter-based resources can connect faster. “A robust transmission network is the foundation for electric reliability,” said Willie Phillips, then-Chair of FERC, calling the interconnection rule a “first step” toward broader transmission reform.
