Drill, Deliver, Decarbonise: Geothermal’s Investment Moment

Is geothermal emerging as the next source of firm clean power for stressed grids?
Q4 2025 marked a clear shift in how geothermal energy is positioned within global energy debates, moving from a niche baseload option to infrastructure-grade, firm clean power. Energy Considered tracking shows Geothermal energy mentioned 212 times this quarter by its 5,000-strong Key Opinion Leader (KOL) community, reflecting growing attention from investors, policymakers, and specialist media focused on grid reliability and execution.

The defining moment of the quarter was the $462 million Series E funding round raised by Fervo Energy, one of the largest financings ever for next-generation geothermal. Reporting consistently framed the deal as a signal of commercial maturity rather than technological experimentation. Benoit Morenne from – The Wall Street Journal, wrote that “the raise puts geothermal in the same capital-allocation conversation as batteries and other grid-reliability assets” underscoring its elevation within firm-power investment markets.

Coverage also highlighted the strategic role of Google as an investor. ESG Today noted that Google’s backing reflects the need for always-on, carbon-free electricity to support data centres and AI workloads, reinforcing geothermal’s value as continuous, weather-independent power rather than intermittent supply.

Drill, Deliver, Decarbonise: Geothermal’s Investment Moment - Quarter 4 2025

Case for tracking:

In Q4 2025, geothermal remained relevant as attention shifted from niche baseload power toward scaling and system-level importance. Compared with Q3, momentum was driven by major investment and permitting reform debates. The key story is Fervo Energy raising $462 million with backing from Google, signalling rising confidence in next-generation geothermal as firm clean power (Reuters; Flipboard/WSJ).

In the U.S., governors pushed for reforms to federal environmental impact assessments, highlighting permitting delays as a core challenge but also a potential policy shift (Ecori; X). Internationally, Indonesia and Southeast Asia continued to position geothermal within green growth strategies, reinforcing its role in energy security and decarbonisation. Overall, Q4 is important to track as investment scale-up and regulatory pressure keep geothermal strategically relevant alongside batteries and renewables.
