Powering the Future

Powering the Future: Hydrogen’s Role in Energy Storage & Heavy Transport

Hydrogen consistently generates between 300 and 400 conversations a quarter amongst Energy Considered’s opinion leaders, particularly amongst consultants, specialist energy media and non-governmental organisations.

Hydrogen plays a pivotal role in the global energy transition. However, Energy Considered is tracking a shift the hydrogen discourse. Mentions of ‘blue’ hydrogen, made from fossil gas with carbon capture and storage, are going down, as ‘green’ hydrogen from electrolysis of water rises up the agenda.

With either method of production, hydrogen’s high energy density and long term storage capability makes it important as a method of storing energy and enhancing grid stability as a fuel for gas turbines. A key application is heavy-duty transport, where heavy vehicle makers are launching hydrogen alternative vehicles at all sizes and load capacities. Green hydrogen has an additional benefit using for surplus renewable energy.

Powering the Future: Hydrogen’s Role in Energy Storage and Heavy Transport - Quarter 3 2024

Case for tracking:

Since we were tracking blue hydrogen and have done a thorough desk research and reporting on it, we have come to understand that it is just a place holder until sustainable hydrogen becomes more scalable. But we also understood that hydrogen is here to stay due to its game changing potential in the steel industry, heavy vehicle fuel cells, and grid-compatible energy storage capability. It can be seen that mentions of blue hydrogen are going down, with most of them revolving around CCUS systems, ammonia production, and strategies adopted by companies to meet carbon-goals.

But when we take a step back and track hydrogen as a whole, we see some interesting new technologies and developments that aim to make hydrogen a more practical fuel, making it a more rich area to track compared to blue hydrogen. Several emerging technologies in nanoparticles, turbines, fuel-cells and constantly changing policies can be spotted here.
